A summit meeting is an event where a group of individuals meets to discuss important issues and topics. These events can take place in person at a conference center, hotel, or other venue, or can be held virtually using online platforms and tools. Regardless of the type of summit, the main goal is to bring together individuals with similar interests and goals in order to foster new ideas and arguments. Summits can also be used to build trust between state leaders and create a foundation for future conversations.
CARE France is preparing for the 2023 Paris Summit on a Global Financial Pact, an international meeting to address the soaring costs of climate, energy, health and economic crises affecting millions of people across the world, especially those most vulnerable. This meeting comes in the wake of a series of catastrophic failures by the UN and other global institutions to deal with these crises.
Summits that do not produce tangible outcomes are often considered a waste of time and resources. However, a summit’s most important function is often symbolic, providing a necessary platform where nation states interact and discuss.
In addition to the regular multilateral follow-up mechanisms, a special Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG) was created to carry out the specific tasks of reviewing and implementing Summit proposals. The SIRG is a committee of the Permanent Council and its meetings are open to all member states and observers. Documents of the SIRG can be found here.
