Global affairs is the study of countries and their interactions with each other at a world scale. It covers diplomacy, trade, security and human rights. It’s the foundation for understanding global issues such as terrorism, refugee crises, global inequality and environmental degradation.
At Sacred Heart, international affairs programs prepare you to tackle real-world problems with confidence and curiosity. You’ll build a deep understanding of different perspectives, languages and traditions to work effectively on teams. And you’ll learn how to dig into data and break down complex trends so you can make informed, evidence-based decisions.
Our interdisciplinary approach to the field integrates political science, economics, history, environmental studies, journalism, geography and more. And you’ll have opportunities to apply your skills to global challenges through internships, the prestigious Keough School Career Trek and semester-long Washington Program. You’ll also have the chance to explore your interests further by selecting a thematic or regional concentration.
Students complete a capstone project during their senior year, either in GLBL 4499, the global affairs senior capstone course, or as a senior essay in a seminar of their choice or a specialized global affairs course such as GLBL 4500. In the latter option, students must secure their own academic advisor and secondary reader in addition to those assigned by a seminar instructor or a GLBL 4500 professor. Whether you want to work for the United Nations, launch your own global business or help solve humanitarian issues, your specialized training in global affairs will set you on the path to success.
